As described by Kenefick et al, and by fFrench, the adult male has chocolate brown hood and its throat has black stringy wattles up to several inches long . The male emits a far-carrying and often repeated ventriloquial clunk repeated every few seconds (the bock call). Another call is more musical, resembling the regular blows of a hammer on an anvill (tonk-tonk-tonk). Females seem not to call.
